Captains Away day At Melton Mowbray

We all arrived in plenty of time, even those who went for a look around town first. The course was in fine condition and 

the greens were immaculate. The trees got in to the act, but you could easily play out. A couple of fairways were undulating, (life on the ocean wave type). Catering was spot on and the cost of the day discounted.

Top man was Roger Davey 46 points, and top woman was Patsy Deeping 40 points . NTP Roger Davey & lost balls

We fielded a team in this prestigious event at Belton Woods.

Bob Ford, Roger Kennedy, Malcolm Robinson & Dave Deeping. The couse was in good condition. The tee boxes not

(will not moan about ours anymore). The food afterwards

could'nt match our 19th hole. Hotel prices for drinks, and a down payment on a buggy secured the use of (£40). The rough was barking ( rough, rough).

Our team didn't finish last. Great weather and nice countryside

views.

Shambles Competition 27th April
10 teams competed for the prizes. Amongst their number one player was apparently seen attempting instead the noble and most definitely ancient art of bog snorkelling as opposed to using a 7 iron on a hole. Despite this distraction the winners with 98 pts were D Plant/A Cooper/G Kinsler & C Allen. They were closely followed on 97 pts  by M Pearce/ S Batchelor/ J Stephenson & R Kennedy. Third  (on countback) were J Harper/J Robinson /G Cannings & Ruth Rickett.

Russian Stableford An aptly named competition, designed to easily lose friends. Played on a difficult course with frozen greens the competition was something of a lottery. The anticipated scores were not achieved.  First the pair o Walton/Richardson with 51 pts. followed by Rawlings/Sutherland 50 pts. and Needham/ Walker 47 pts.  third after countback  N t P: Ian Sutherland.

2 January Shambles...The course starts to dry out, sufficient to play the 4 man team comp over 18 holes.  Out first and finished top, the team of Con Lingren, Mick Burch, Keith Manning and Colin Lockwood clear winners on 140 points, second and 15 points adrift on 125 the team of Barry Jones, Gerry Cannings,Jim Rorison and Roger Kennedy. 9 hole roll up Another day severely limited by the monsoon conditions. Restricted to 9 holes, Gerry Cannings came out on top with 17 points after count back from Art Cooper  and third Keith Manning on 16 points. Richard Chapman was nearest the pin.                  Results
 
Turkey Trot.After the closure of several holes in recent weeks the competition was played over 18 holes but in difficult conditions. Those adding to their Christmas Fayre were :-

Blind pairs On a course close to unplayable and reduced to 13 holes Richard Chapman and Jim Rorison came out on top with 44 points. In second place after count back with 43 points Ron Needham and Paul Cooper.

Medford  Dave Deeping and Jim Rorison both carded a nett medal front 9 of 36 and a back 9 of 17 points for a total of 19.  Dave winning on count back. Andy Locke and Keith Manning both with 21 points were also separated on count back. NTP Graham Wilson (again). Front 9 John Watson 36 and back 9 Danny Huddlestone 21.

Traffic Lights. A heavy wet course reduced scoring, only Ray Dowland bettering par with 37 pts. Paul Cooper 2nd with 35 and John Watson 3rd with 34 in a card playoff from Art Cooper.

Texas Scramble. A good field for the ever popular event. The course was playing long and a Thorney wind throughout. In the conditions an excellent score of 61.7 for Ron Needham, Graham Hustler, Trevor Walker and Ian Sutherland.

Better Ball Pairs  A high score for John Rickett and Les Burton to win with 45 points. Second Keith Wake and Jon Crouch with 43 and a five way card play off for the third prize on 41 points. Paul Cooper and Max Webb came out on top. Nearest the Pin Barry Jones and Colin Lockwood won a healthy 2's prize. Greensomes After much discussion about handicaps, Barry Jones and Mike Pearce were the clear winners with 40 points playing off 17. Four pairs challenged for the other two prizes, all on 37, Pat Bloom and Colin Lockwood playing off 16 were second followed by Roger Kennedy and Art Cooper also off 16. Charity day  A good day for Guide Dogs. A very well supported day 48 members, 14 ladies and 19 guests competed. Blessed with the weather (but no fly past) a good day for scoring.
Colin Lockwood did not disappoint and with 40 points won the Seniors comp, Lyn Rawlings kept it in the family winning the ladies comp with 37 pts and Paul Jackson from Tydd St Giles won the section for visitors and guests. 123 Waltz  Near gale force winds reduced the field and with heavy rain not all completed the course. Of those that did, the team of Lockwood/Pearce/Walton came out on top with 67 points. Traffic Lights A single shot between the top 6 prizes. The man in form Richard Drew winner after count back on 38 from Les Burton and Ray Dowland. Also on count back in 4th place Merv Bloom on 37 ahead of Keith Wake and Dave Whiting.

Five ladies joined the group, Pat bloom had a commendable 33 considering the yardage of white and yellow tees. Ruth Rickett was second on count back with 29 points.
Better Ball Pairs A blustery day but despite that some excellent scoring. 44 points after 2 way count back was sufficient for 3rd place for John Unwin and Pat Bloom. In 2nd one point better Bob Ford and Gordon Kind but performance of the day was Jon Crouch and Richard Drew with an exceptional  score of 50 points. With only three  2 point gross bogeys on the card, all other holes were par or better!! To add to his day Jon Crouch was nearest the pin.

Texas Scramble  Poor weather deterred many but after rapid re-organisation and thanks to Graham and Nick four teams took to the course. Immaculately managed to give each team a 7.4 point allowance. A close result as Bob F, Mike P, Ian S and Graham H, were winners with a gross 69. Second one point behind Gordon K, Mike W, Jon C, and Dave D. After count back third with gross 72 Paul R, Ray D, Nick R and Richard D ahead of Tom E, Steve B, John U and Malcolm R. An enjoyable day for those that played.
 
Greensomes 44 members enjoyed the greensomes competition with John Rickett and Maurice Sharman posting a very creditable 44 points to win the comp. Jim Rorison and Pat Bloom were second one point adrift and third prize went Richard Chapman and Derek Hippersley on 39 points after count back. Bogey Comp Another high scoring day as 14 players bettered the course. Three players were 4 up and decided on count back Peter Mills, Mick Bush and Allan Brown. Texas Scramble. Always an enjoyable format that allows for a light hearted game of golf but perhaps a little controversial with the mix of three and four man teams. On the day Brian Harrison, Derek Hippersley, Bill Dodman and John Unwin were the clear winners with a very low score of 56.4.
The team of Ford/Pat Bloom/Harper/Pearce were second with 61 and Walton/Marsh/Jones collected the third prize.

Eclectic A win overall for Paul Cooper on 55 by 1 point from Gordon Kind. In third place in division two was Jonathan Harper 58, and tied for 4th Dave Plant, Keith Wake and Peter Mills.

Division 1 Paul Rawlings was the winner with a score of 58. Mike Walton and John Unwin tied 2nd a shot back and Graham Wilson was 4th on 60.

Turkey Trot Appalling conditions, high wind and heavy rain reduced the field to 22 players. Winner with an excellent score in the conditions Danny Huddlestone  with 37points. In Division on a very good score of 55 Brian Parrish was the winner from Ray Plater 56 and Peter Mills. Paul Cooper, Gordon Kind and Keith Wake tied the remaining places on 58 points.

Blind Pairs. In the annual event Ron Needham’s 40 points and Brian Moorhen’s 26 was good enough to win the day on count back from the consistent pairing of Jon Crouch and Bob Ford (both 33), a single point ahead of Mike Pearce and Ian McCulloch. Richard Chapman was nearest the pin. Results

Turkey trot. The Captain found some form! On a cold frosty morning and un-receptive greens a score of 40 points won the day. Also, winners Bob Mason, 35 pts, Maurice Sharman 34, Jim Dudley 34, Ed Skinner 34, Richard Chapman 32, Bill Dodman 32 and finally Dave Whiting 3. Anne Edwards led the way for the ladies.                                         

Yellow Peril: Impressive scoring. Ron Needham, Bill Dodman and Reg Boot carded a formidable score of 79 points. 7 points clear of Keith Wake, Barry Jones and Brian Morehen. In third place after countback the team of Ian Sutherland, Ray Plater and Jon Crouch.                Results

Medford: The beginnings of winter but a calm day. Stuart McDoughal with a low scoring medal half of 33 and 17 stableford points won with 16 points. Team Game, best two of three players per hole, all three to count on par 3's.  15 hardy souls in attrocious conditions battled it out! Dave Plant, Paul Rawlings and Dave Crouch with a very good score considering the conditions of 85 points. Ian Sutherland, Paul Cooper and Ian McCulloch secured second with 82 points. Treveor Walker managed to reach the 7th green!!!

Yellow Peril: A day of all seasons and a course in need of a cut limited scoring. 67 points was the winning score for Bob Mason, Richard Chapman and John Watson. Second and third places decided on countback with 66 points the teams of John McCann, Alan Rust and Mike Walton followed by Allan Shoemake Geoff Hellon and Colin Shearman.
